2.36.030 Fire Chief.

A. Appointment. The Fire Chief shall be appointed by the Mayor, to a term of four years, subject to approval and annual review by the City Council. Candidates will submit a resume to a committee appointed by the Mayor. The committee shall consist of three persons from the area with expertise in the fire protection field (i.e., fire chiefs from surrounding communities). The committee will recommend to the Mayor the most qualified applicant(s).

B. Operation and Duties.

1. The operation of the Fire Department shall be under the direction and command of the Fire Chief.

2. The Fire Chief shall:

a. Appoint, supervise and command the personnel of the Fire Department;

b. Develop and maintain operational policies, procedures and training of the Fire Department;

c. Advise and provide assistance to the City Council;

d. Have custody of, and all maintenance responsibilities for, all fire equipment, supplies, materials, buildings and grounds assigned by the City Council;

e. Maintain records of the Fire Department operations;

f. Report activities of the Fire Department monthly to the City Council;

g. Perform other emergency service duties as directed by the Mayor.

3. The volunteer Fire Chief shall be removed from office by the Mayor when a majority of the City Council requests that action in writing. The Chief shall be given adequate notice and an opportunity to be heard before the City Council within 10 days following receipt of the notice. The City Council’s decision shall be issued no later than 10 days after notice and hearing required by this subsection. The Mayor shall suspend the Fire Chief from duty within five days of the Council request to remove that person from office, pending final action by the City Council.

4. Fees and other reimbursement paid to volunteers for fire fighting shall be set by resolution of the City Council. (Ord. 86-01, 1986; Ord. 97-06, 1997)
