2.40.010 Established.

There is established a department of the city known as the police department. The head of the department shall be the chief of police who shall be appointed by the city manager, and who shall be subject to the direction and supervision of the city manager. (Prior code § 19A-1)

2.40.020 Powers and duties.

The police department shall:

A.    Be responsible for the preservation of public peace and order, the preservation and detection of crime and apprehension of violators of the ordinances of the city, the protection of persons and property, and the enforcement of the law;

B.    Serve all warrants and other processes properly directed and delivered to them;

C.    Apprehend and arrest persons violating federal or state law, as provided by law, and deliver them over to proper authorities;

D.    Operate and maintain the city jail facility;

E.    Operate and maintain the city animal control shelter;

F.    Perform all other duties pertaining to the office of policemen;

G.    Provide other services and perform other duties as directed by the city manager. (Prior code § 19A-2)
