Sec. A6-16. Civil service examination required.

All new applicants for positions in the fire department of the city shall be required to submit to a civil service examination for the position of third class fireman. (C.O. 10 § 2, 11-13-67.)

Sec. A6-17. Promotion board.

There is hereby created a promotion board which shall consist of five members of the department appointed by the chief of the department. Three members of such promotion board shall be appointed for terms of two years and two members shall be appointed for terms of three years. The chief of the department shall serve as ex officio chairman of said board. (C.O. 10 § 3, 11-13-67.)

    Editor’s Note: C.O. 97, § 1, adopted July 11, 2006, effective Sept. 25, 2006, repealed § A6-18 in its entirety. Formerly, said section pertained to positions filled by promotion as enacted by C.O. 10, § 4, adopted Nov. 13, 1967.

Sec. A6-19. Eligibility for promotion.

No third class fireman shall be eligible for promotion to any other position, until such person shall have had at least two years’ continuous service, with the department. (C.O. 10 § 5, 11-13-67.)

Sec. A6-20. Reserved.

    Editor’s Note: Section 8 of C.O. 75, adopted Feb. 12, 1991, repealed former § A6-20, which pertained to the appointment of the chief of the fire department and derived from C.O. 10, § 6, adopted Nov. 13, 1967.

Sec. A6-21. Probation.

All appointments or promotions other than the chief of the department shall be for a probationary period of one year. If during such probationary period the conduct or capacity of the probationer is not satisfactory, then, and in that event, the chief of the department shall forthwith notify the probationer and the governing body of the city in writing that he will not receive permanent appointment; in the absence of such notice, such probationer shall forthwith receive permanent appointment at the expiration of the one-year probation period.
