CHIEF OF PUBLIC SAFETY

2.31.010 Creation.
There is created and established the position of chief of public safety, referred to herein as “chief.” The chief shall be appointed by the mayor based upon qualifications and experience for such position and may be removed from office by the mayor at any time, for any reason, subject only to any applicable law, ordinance, rule or regulation then in force and effect. The chief shall be excluded from the classified civil service. (Ord. 872 § 1 (part), 2009)
2.31.020 Chief’s powers and duties.
The chief shall:
A. Possess and exercise the powers and responsibilities of the chief of police under Chapter 2.36 of the Ocean Shores Municipal Code, as that office, its powers and responsibilities are prescribed by ordinance, rule, regulation and state law;
B. Possess and exercise the powers and responsibilities of the fire chief under Chapter 2.32 of the Ocean Shores Municipal Code, as that office, its powers and responsibilities are prescribed by ordinance, rule, regulation and state law;
C. Appoint, assign, discipline, demote and discharge all subordinate officers and employees of the police department and the fire department, subject to requirements and limitations of the Civil Service Law, civil service commission’s rules and regulations, as prescribed by ordinance and state law.

2.31.030 Compensation.
The chief of public safety shall receive such compensation as may be fixed by the city council at the time the budget is made as provided by law. (Ord. 872 § 1 (part), 2009)
