2.36.010 Established.
There is created and established a department of police to be operated under the direction and control of a chief of police, subject to the supervision of the city manager, or the substitute city manager in the absence, disability or suspension of the city manager, or during any period of vacancy in the city manager’s office. (Ord. 11 § 1, 1970)
2.36.020 Chief—Appointment and removal.
Any chief of police appointed prior to the effective date of the ordinance codified in this section may be removed by the city manager subject to any applicable law, ordinance, rule or regulation relating to civil service then in force and effect. Any chief of police appointed after the effective date of the ordinance codified in this section shall be appointed by the city manager upon the basis of his qualification and experience for such office, and he may be removed by the city manager at any time, for any reason, subject only to any applicable law, ordinance, rule or regulation then in force and effect. Police chiefs appointed after the effective date of the ordinance codified in this section are excluded from the classified civil service. (Ord. 483 § 1, 1989: Ord. 11 § 2, 1970)
2.36.030 Chief—Bond required.
The chief of police, so appointed, shall qualify before entering upon his duties by furnishing a fidelity bond, at the expense of the city, in a sum set by the city council, and upon filing his oath to support the government of the United States of America, the state and the city and to the faithful performance of his duties. (Ord. 11 § 3, 1970)
2.36.040 Powers and duties—Compensation.
The chief of police and his deputies shall have all of the powers granted, together with the duties imposed by laws of the state relating to chiefs of police of cities of the class to which Ocean Shores now or hereafter may belong, and, in addition thereto, he shall have the power to enforce the ordinances of the city and to perform such other services as the laws of the state or the ordinances of the city may now or hereafter require, and shall receive for the performance of his duties such compensation as shall be fixed by ordinance. 2.36.050 Appointment of deputies.
The chief of police may appoint, with the consent of the city manager, such deputies as may be appropriate and necessary for the proper performance of the duties of his office. (Ord. 11 § 5, 1970)
2.36.060 Employees’ status.
The present employees of the Ocean Shores police force shall become the employees of the city, subject to review by the chief of police and the city manager. (Ord. 11 § 6, 1970)
