17.32.010 Application

Lighting of private streets is not mandatory but if it is desired these standards shall apply. (Ord. 03-1033 § 11)

17.32.020 Purpose

This chapter establishes lighting levels for private streets in order to limit the impact from the lighting to the surrounding properties while also providing for traffic safety and increasing the pedestrian’s sense of security. (Ord. 03-1033 § 11)

17.32.030 Street Lighting Standards

A.    If street lighting is installed, the general levels of illumination shall be consistent with the IESNA Handbook, Figure 22-8, and the average illumination level may not exceed those specified in the IESNA Handbook by more than 0.2 footcandles.

B.    The uniformity ratio shall not exceed that specified by the IESNA Handbook. If the street has a sidewalk on only one (1) side, the streetlights shall be located on the side of the street that the sidewalk is on. (Ord. 03-1033 § 11)

17.32.040 Street Lighting Fixtures

A.    All street lighting fixtures shall be “cut-off” fixtures as defined by IESNA. If necessary, as determined by CPTED review, fixtures shall include glare shields to minimize light directed to the rear of the fixtures or on to adjacent properties. The maximum mounting height of street lights is twenty (20) feet.

B.    If the design for an area suggests the use of street lighting fixtures of a particular “period” or architectural style, or existing historical fixtures are to be retained, then the non-cut-off fixtures may be used either as alternatives or supplements to street lighting described above.

1.    For fixtures that do not meet the “cut-off” criteria, the maximum initial lumens generated by each fixture shall not exceed two thousand (2,000) lumens.

2.    Mounting heights of such fixtures shall not exceed fifteen (15) feet for new fixtures. Where historic fixtures are being retained and/or extended, mounting height shall be that of the existing fixtures. (Ord. 03-1033 § 11)
