(a) It is unlawful for a person to operate a motor vehicle that displays expired vehicle registration license plates.

(b) It is unlawful for a person to display a temporary registration number plate, tag, or certificate after it expires.

(c) This Section is designated a noncriminal violation. Upon conviction the penalties set forth at Section 1-72(a) of this Code shall apply. As guidance, the Court may impose a fine in the amount of fifty dollars ($50.00) for any license plate, temporary or otherwise, expired for less than fifty-nine (59) days, and a fine in the amount of one hundred dollars ($100.00) for any license plate, temporary or otherwise, expired for sixty (60) or more days.

(d) It is an affirmative defense to a violation of this section that the vehicle registration was renewed not later than the last day of the month following the date of expiration. (Ord. 1223 §1, 2016; Ord. 1230 §§1, 2, 2016)
