2.28.010 Civil Service system adopted.

A. The system commonly known as Civil Service, as set forth in Chapter 41.08 RCW, is adopted for the Fire Department of the City, and all full paid employment therein, excluding the position of Fire Chief, advancement, demotion, discharge, or control thereof, and the members thereof, excluding the Fire Chief, shall be under the control of and governed by the Civil Service rules prescribed in or adopted pursuant to said Chapter 41.08 RCW as now enacted or as hereafter amended.

B. Qualifications of the position of Fire Chief shall be as determined from time to time by the City Manager, in accordance with applicable statutory requirements, and shall include, but not be limited to, experience as Chief of a paid fire department; one year’s experience as an Assistant Chief of a paid department, or comparable position; two year’s experience as a Battalion Chief of a paid fire department, or comparable position; or five year’s as a Captain of a paid fire department, or comparable position; and has demonstrated administrative ability in an agency of a size comparable to the City of Sunnyside. 2.28.020 Civil Service Commission.

There is created for the administration of the Civil Service for the Fire Department, a Civil Service Commission, composed of three members. Each member thereof shall hold office for a period of six years, and shall serve without pay; except, however, that the first three members appointed to the Commission shall serve respectively for the periods of two, four, and six years. In the event that any Civil Service Commissioner resigns, becomes disqualified, or is removed for cause, another Commissioner shall be appointed to take his place for the unexpired portion of the term. 2.28.030 Provisions adopted by reference.

The ordinance codified in this chapter is adopted pursuant to provisions of Chapter 31 of the Washington State Session Laws of 1935, and all the provisions of said Chapter 31, except Section 7 thereof, and on file in the office of the City Clerk, and are by reference incorporated in and made a part of this chapter.
