12.12.010 Numbering generally.

Subject to HBC 12.12.020, the numerical designation of all doorways and entrances to buildings, lots, yards, and grounds fronting upon the several ways, avenues, streets, drives, places, and squares of the townsite service area shall be established in accordance with the following system:

A. Except where otherwise specified, 100 numbers are allotted to each block; one whole number is allotted to each 20 feet of frontage in each block and where there shall be more than one doorway or entrance within such 20 feet, half numbers shall be used;

B. Even numbers shall be used on the northerly side of streets or ways extending in an easterly and westerly direction and on the easterly side of avenues and streets extending in a northerly and southerly direction; odd numbers shall be used on the southerly side of streets and ways extending in an easterly and westerly direction and on the westerly side of avenues and streets extending in a northerly and southerly direction;

C. If a street constitutes a loop (Helms Loop, Deishu Loop) odd numbers shall be used on the inside of the loop, even numbers shall be used on the outside of the loop, with the numbers beginning at 0 at the beginning of the loop (the entrance nearest the intersection of Main and Front Streets).

12.12.020 Designation of numbers.

A. To provide for the systematic numbering of premises now and in the future, Main Street, for north and south numbering, shall be the division line; numbers north of Main Street shall be numerically progressive beginning with zero at Main Street and numbers south of Main Street shall be numerically progressive beginning with zero at Main Street. To arrive at numbers of premises on streets running easterly and westerly, Front Street shall be the division line, with numbers numerically progressive beginning with zero at Front Street, except that from the beginning of Young Road and proceeding north, Young Road shall be the division line, with numbers numerically progressive beginning with zero at Young Road and running easterly and westerly.

B. Each block from the division line or zero point shall bear numbers in regular numerical sequence, that is, the first block north of Main Street shall be numbered from zero to 99, the second block north of Main Street shall be numbered from 100 to 199 and so forth. The first block south of Main Street shall be numbered from zero to 99 inclusive, and the second block south of Main Street shall be numbered from 100 to 199 inclusive, and so forth. (Example: The Pioneer Bar may be issued No. 13 Second Avenue, North, and the Visitor’s Center may be issued No. 122 Second Avenue, South.) The first block west of Front Street shall be numbered progressively from zero to 99 inclusive, the second block shall be numbered progressively from 100 to 199 inclusive, and so forth. (Example: The Sheldon Museum may be issued No. 11 Main Street.) The first block east of Young Road shall be numbered progressively from zero to 99, East, inclusive, the first block west of Young Road shall be numbered progressively from zero to 99, West, inclusive, and so forth. (Example: A home on the east side of Young Road may be issued No. 2 Mathias Ave., East, and a home on the west side of Young Road may be issued 228 Mathias Ave., West.)

C. Any street, avenue, way, or pedestrian or vehicular traffic artery beginning and/or ending at some distance from the division line (or zero points) shall have premises located thereon numbered to correspond with the general numbering system; for example, First Street premises shall be numbered from 200 to 299 between Union Street and View Street.

12.12.030 Exceptions to numbering system.

The buildings in the portion of Fort William H. Seward known as the “Significant Structure Area” shall be exempt from the numbering requirements of HBC 12.12.010 and 12.12.020 and be allowed to retain their historical numbers.

12.12.040 Installation of numbers.

Numbers at least four inches high, of a color which contrasts with the background on which they are mounted, or with a reflective surface, must be installed on each and every building as designated in the official building numbering index kept in the planning office. The developer shall place the numbers assigned by the planner on the developer’s building at a location specified by the fire department for maximum visibility for police, fire, and rescue crews.
