10.08.010 Naming of city streets.

A. Existing Streets. Whenever the city council finds that the existing name of any public or private street should be changed, the city council shall consider the proposed name for, or the change of name of, such street. At or after the conclusion of the city council’s consideration, the city council may adopt a name for, or change the name of, such street, and upon the adoption or change thereof shall make an order and file said order with the city clerk officially designating the name for such street. Thereafter, such street shall be known by the name so designated.

B. New Streets. Whenever the city council finds that any new public or private street should be designated with a name, the city council shall consider the proposed name for such new street.

C. Allowed Names – Limitations. The city council may name any public or private street after any person, place, or thing that the city council deems appropriate. The city council shall not name any public or private street after any city official or employee, whether living or deceased, with the exception of the following individuals who lose their lives in the line of duty: “emergency response providers” as that term is defined in Section 2 of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 (6 U.S.C. 101(6)), members of the United States military, and similar public safety officers.

D. Stakeholder Consent. New or existing street name changes shall require unanimous consent from all property owners and businesses with frontage or an address on the subject street.

E. Administrative Implementation. The city manager or his/her designee may establish administrative rules, regulations and standards to implement this section. [Ord. 2021-223 § 3].
