2.13.010 Created.

The community safety committee was originally formed by the city council in May 1993. Upon its original adoption, the duties and responsibilities of the committee were not adopted as part of the Cerritos Municipal Code. In the interest of consistency with all other city advisory bodies that are governed through provisions within the Cerritos Municipal Code, the community safety committee is hereby memorialized within the Cerritos Municipal Code herein. 2.13.020 Membership.

The community safety committee shall consist of ten members who are residents of and remain residents of the city of Cerritos during their service on the committee. Each councilmember shall appoint two committee members, subject to approval by the city council. In addition to the ten appointed members of the committee, the public safety manager or his/her designee shall be a nonvoting ex officio member. The public safety manager shall act as secretary. 2.13.030 Members—Absence—Removal.

Notwithstanding any other provisions of this chapter, any member of the committee who is absent from any two consecutive meetings of the committee, unless excused from such attendance by majority consent of committee action and reflected in its minutes, or who is absent from a total of three meetings of the committee in any six-month period, unless excused from such attendance by majority committee action and reflected in its minutes, shall thereby automatically forfeit their position or office as a member of the committee, and the name of such person shall be automatically removed from the membership of the committee immediately after the adjournment of any such third consecutive meeting or of any such third meeting in any such six-month period, as the case may be, at which such member has not appeared.

The chairperson or the secretary of the committee shall thereupon promptly notify the city council, and any such person so ceasing to be a member of the committee, of such fact, where upon the vacancy so created shall be filled by appointment pursuant to Section 2.15.010(c). (Ord. 1059 § 1, 2026)

2.13.040 Purpose and duties.

The purpose of this committee is to act in an advisory capacity to the city council on all matters pertaining to crime, fire prevention, disaster and emergency preparedness, and traffic and pedestrian safety. The committee will have the following duties and responsibilities:

(1) Provide the city council with recommendations and input for the enhancement of public safety within the city.

(2) Promote the education of the community on measures that can be taken to enhance public safety within the city. (Ord. 1059 § 1, 2026)

2.13.050 Records required.

The committee shall cause minutes to be kept of all its official acts and proceedings. (Ord. 1059 § 1, 2026)

2.13.060 Excess appropriations for city officials.

The committee shall have no power or authority to bind or obligate the city or any officers or department thereof for any money, debt, undertaking or obligation of any kind in excess of the appropriation which the city council may have made for the purpose of the committee in any fiscal year. 2.13.070 Organization.

The committee shall select a chairperson and a vice chairperson from among its members, for terms of one year. The committee shall select its officers once every twelve months. Said selection shall be made at the first meeting of the committee following the annual mayoral transition. (Ord. 1059 § 1, 2026)

2.13.080 Meetings.

Meetings of the committee shall take place on the third Wednesday of odd numbered months at seven p.m. in the city council chamber. (Ord. 1059 § 1, 2026)

2.13.090 Compensation.

Committee members shall be paid such compensation as the city council may by resolution from time to time provide. (Ord. 1059 § 1, 2026)
