2.17.010 Created.

A senior services commission, which may be known and referred to as the “senior services commission” of the city of Cerritos, California, is hereby created and established. (Ord. 1057 § 2, 2026)

2.17.020 Membership.

The senior services commission shall consist of five members who are residents of and remain residents of the city of Cerritos, during their service on the commission, and are fifty years of age or older at the time of appointment. Each councilmember shall appoint one commission member, subject to approval by the city council. In addition to the five appointed members of the commission, the community services manager or their designee shall be a nonvoting ex officio member. The community services manager or their designee shall act as secretary. (Ord. 1057 § 2, 2026)

2.17.030 Members—Absence—Removal.

Notwithstanding any other provisions of this chapter, any member of the commission who is absent from any two consecutive meetings of the commission, unless excused from such attendance by majority consent of commission action and reflected in its minutes, or who is absent from a total of three meetings of the commission in any six-month period, unless excused from such attendance by majority commission action and reflected in its minutes, shall thereby automatically forfeit their position or office as a member of the commission, and the name of such person shall be automatically removed from the membership of the commission immediately after the adjournment of any such third consecutive meeting or of any such third meeting in any such six-month period, as the case may be, at which such member has not appeared.

The chairperson or the secretary of the commission shall thereupon promptly notify the city council, and any such person so ceasing to be a member of the commission, of such fact, where upon the vacancy so created shall be filled by appointment pursuant to Section 2.15.010(c). 2.17.040 Purpose and duties.

The purpose of this commission is to act in an advisory capacity to the city council on the needs of senior services programming, including day excursions, special events and senior-related resources. The commission is also responsible for providing guidance on accessibility matters. Duties of the commission include, but are not limited to, the following:

1) Support the city’s ongoing senior services activities, including recreational and educational classes, information and referral resources, health and human service lectures, senior special events, day excursions, and senior safety issues;

2) Provide guidance on activities, logistics, and marketing for senior services programming, including the annual Health and Wellness Fair, holiday dances and events, and senior day excursions;

3) Promote and stimulate public interest in city events;

4) Encourage inclusive practices to ensure senior services programming and events are accessible and welcoming to all residents, fifty years of age and older;

5) Provide recommendations to the city council concerning the city’s senior community. Said recommendations could include, but are not limited to, advising the city council on the needs of senior services opportunities and resources;

6) Researching and recommending policies, programs, and services related to disability needs; and

7) Other senior services and disability need duties as directed by the city council. (Ord. 1057 § 2, 2026)

2.17.050 Records required.

The commission shall cause proper records to be kept of all its official acts and proceedings. (Ord. 1057 § 2, 2026)

2.17.060 Excess appropriations for city officials.

The commission shall have no power or authority to bind or obligate the city or any officers or department thereof for any money, debt, undertaking or obligation of any kind in excess of the appropriation which the city council may have made for the purpose of the commission in any fiscal year. 2.17.070 Organization.

The commission shall select a chairperson and a vice chairperson from among its members, for terms of one year. The committee shall select its officers once every twelve months. Said selection shall be made at the first meeting of the commission following the annual mayoral transition. (Ord. 1057 § 2, 2026)

2.17.080 Meetings.

Meetings of the senior services commission shall take place on the third Tuesday of odd-numbered months at seven p.m. in the city council chamber. (Ord. 1057 § 2, 2026)

2.17.090 Compensation.

Members of the commission shall be paid such compensation as the city council may by resolution from time to time provide. (Ord. 1057 § 2, 2026)
