14.28.010 Standards.

Except as otherwise provided herein, all installations shall be in conformity with the provisions of this title and with approved standards for safety to life and property. (Ord. 1282 § 2 (part), 2003: Ord. 765 § 8 (A), 1969).

14.28.020 Residential installations.

All residential installations shall comply with the requirements of the California Electrical Code and all other applicable codes. (Ord. 1282 § 2 (part), 2003: Ord. 765 § 8 (B), 1969).

14.28.030 Commercial and industrial installations.

All commercial and industrial installations shall comply with the requirements of the California Electrical Code and all other applicable codes. (Ord. 1282 § 2 (part), 2003: Ord. 765 § 8 (C), 1969).

14.28.060 One main service switch required.

(a)    One main service switch shall be provided to control and disconnect each set of service entrance conductors. The switch shall be located at the nearest readily accessible location, to the entrance of the service conductors, either inside or outside of the building wall and shall be Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc., approved for service entrance use.

(b)    Exceptions.

(1)    More than one service switch may be used to control the entire current supplied through one set of service entrance conductors, where the extra switches are used to supply current to emergency lights, emergency equipment of water pumps are depended on as fire protection;

(2)    A main service switch will not be required for additions made to an existing dwelling service switch prior to the effective date of the ordinance codified herein, provided:

(A)    The raceway for the service entrance conductors is not increased in size;

(B)    All service equipment is grouped in one readily accessible location;

(C)    The entire current through each meter is controlled by not to exceed six disconnecting means;

(D)    The addition is comprised of added load without danger of overload;

(E)    The type of occupancy is not changed. (Ord. 1282 § 2 (part), 2003: Ord. 765 § 8 (F), 1969).

14.28.070 Six metered subdivisions.

In buildings supplied at not more than three hundred volts, a single set of service entrance conductors may supply one and not more than six metered subdivisions, if grouped at the point of entrance, and:

(1)    The entire current through each individual meter shall be controlled by not more than one single switch or circuit breaker;

(2)    The entire service of the metered subdivisions must be capable of being disconnected in not more than six operations;

(3)    For installations involving more than six metered subdivisions, the entire current shall be taken through one master service switch or breaker. (Ord. 1282 § 2 (part), 2003: Ord. 765 § 8 (G), 1969).

14.28.090 Standards for materials.

All electrical materials, devices, appliances, apparatus, and equipment, installed or used, shall be in conformity with the provisions of this title and with approved standards for safety to life and property.

Listing or labeling, as conforming to the standards of the Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc., the National Bureau of Standards, the United States Bureau of Mines, or other nationally recognized laboratories, shall be prima facie evidence of conformity with the approved standards for safety to life and property. 14.28.100 Used materials.

Previously used material shall not be reused in any work without the written approval obtained in advance from the chief electrical inspector. (Ord. 1282 § 2 (part), 2003: Ord. 765 § 8 (J), 1969).

14.28.110 Alterations and additions.

Additions or extensions to, and alterations and renewals of, existing installations shall be made in compliance with the provisions of this title. (Ord. 1282 § 2 (part), 2003: Ord. 765 § 9, 1969).

14.28.120 Responsibility.

This title shall not be construed to relieve from or lessen the responsibility of any party owning, operating, controlling or installing any electrical wiring, devices, appliances, apparatus, or equipment for damages to person or property caused by defects therein, nor shall the city enforcing this title be held as assuming any such liability by reason of the inspection authorized herein, or certificate of inspection and approval issued as herein provided.
