9.12.010 Title.

The ordinance codified in this chapter shall be known as the “Jefferson County inventory of impounded vehicles ordinance.” (Ord. O-149-94 § 1.0, 1994)

9.12.020 Purpose.

The purpose of this chapter is to provide authority for peace officers to conduct inventories of impounded vehicles. Such inventories are necessary to protect private property held in police custody, to reduce or prevent the assertion of false claims for stolen property, and to protect the public and property from any hazardous condition or instrumentality that may be associated with the vehicle. 9.12.030 Inventory of impounded or seized vehicle.

A.    A vehicle that has been impounded, seized as evidence in a criminal investigation, or seized for forfeiture, by a peace officer of Jefferson County shall be inventoried for condition and property contents within twenty-four (24) hours of impounding or seizure.

B.    The inventory shall include, but is not limited to, the contents of all closed containers and compartments within the vehicle.

C.    The condition and contents of the impounded or seized vehicle shall be described on a property receipt.

D.    All impounded or seized items of personal property contained in the vehicle that are not part of the vehicle and that appear to have a value of more than one hundred dollars ($100.00) shall be removed from the vehicle and stored in an evidence locker. (Ord. O-149-94 § 3.0, 1994)
