10.10.010 Compression brakes prohibited.

Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, no person shall, within the City limits, use motor vehicle brakes which are in any way activated or operated by the compression of the engine of any such motor vehicle or any unit or part thereof. It shall be an affirmative defense that said compression brakes were applied in an emergency and were necessary for the protection of the person and/or property. (Ord. 56-97 § 1)

10.10.020 Exception for fire department.

This chapter shall not apply to any member of King County Fire Protection District Nos. 37 or 43 operating a vehicle of either fire protection district, nor to any person operating any public conveyance within the City limits. (Ord. 56-97 § 1)

10.10.030 Signage.

The Public Works Director of the City of Covington shall direct the posting of signs at all appropriate locations within the City informing the public of this chapter. The Chief of Police shall take reasonable steps to inform the public and businesses located within the City of this chapter. (Ord. 56-97 § 1)

10.10.040 Violation – Penalty.

Violation of any of the provisions of this chapter shall be a civil infraction punishable as follows:

(1) Every person who is convicted of a violation of this chapter shall be punished by a fine not less than $50.00 nor more than $1,000;

(2) On a second conviction for a violation of this chapter within a five-year period, a person shall be punished by a fine not less than $100.00 nor more than $1,000; and

(3) On a third conviction for a violation of this chapter within a five-year period, a person shall be punished by a fine of not less than $300.00 nor more than $1,000. (Ord. 56-97 § 1)
