1.02.010 Use of words and phrases.

As used in the ordinances of the city or this code, unless the context or subject matter clearly requires otherwise:

(1) The words or phrases defined in this section shall have the indicated meanings; and

(2) Pronouns of the masculine or feminine gender are read to include both the masculine and feminine gender; and

(3) The words and phrases in the plural number include the singular number and words and phrases in the singular number include the plural number; and

(4) The words and phrases in the present tense include the past and future tenses and words and phrases in the future tense include the present tense; and

(5) The use of the title of an agency, board, commission, department, employee, or officer means that agency, board, commission, department, employee, or officer of the city unless otherwise specifically designated. 1.02.020 Across.

1.02.030 Business.

“Business” means any kind of enterprise, establishment, occupation, profession, vocation, and all other kinds of activities and matters, conducted for private profit or benefit, either directly or indirectly, anywhere within the jurisdiction of the city. 1.02.040 CFR.

“CFR” means the “Code of Federal Regulations.” [Ord. 1134 § 1(2), 1995; Ord. 993 § 1(4), 1992. Prior Ord. 286 § 5, 1970. Formerly 1.01.050(4).]

1.02.050 City.

“City” means the city of Des Moines, Washington or the area within the territorial limits of the city of Des Moines, Washington and the territory outside the city over which the city has jurisdiction or control because of any constitutional or statutory provision. 1.02.060 City council.

1.02.070 Code.

1.02.080 County.

1.02.090 Days.

1.02.100 Engage in.

1.02.110 Ex officio.

1.02.120 Goods.

1.02.130 KCC.

1.02.140 Legal holidays.

1.02.150 May.

1.02.160 Must.

1.02.170 Oath.

1.02.180 Occupant.

1.02.190 Operate.

1.02.200 Owner.

“Owner” includes, when pertaining to a building, structure, or land, a part owner, joint owner, tenant in common, tenant in partnership, joint tenant, purchaser and seller under a real estate contract, or tenant of the entirety, of the whole or part of such building, structure, or land. 1.02.210 Person.

“Person” means a natural person, association, business trust, club, company, corporation, firm, governmental entity, joint stock company, joint venture, marital community, organization, partnership, society, trust, or the agent, employee, factor, lessee, manager, officer, personal representative, servant, or trustee of any of them. 1.02.220 RCW.

1.02.230 Sale.

1.02.240 Shall.

1.02.250 State.

1.02.260 Street.

“Street” includes all alleys, avenues, boulevards, bridges, circles, county roads, courts, curbs, drives, federal highways, freeways, land path, lanes, parkways, places, public roads, public streets, public ways, sidewalks, squares, state highways, streets, ways, or other public rights-of-way in the city that have been or may hereafter be dedicated and open to public use, or such other public property so designated in any law of this state. 1.02.270 Tenant.

1.02.280 USC.

1.02.290 WAC.
