FILLING OF VACANCIES – PROBATIONARY PERIOD

3.44.010 Filling of vacancies.

Whenever a position in the classified civil service becomes vacant, the police chief may request the commission for the names and addresses of three persons available for employment. The commission shall certify to the police chief the top three names of the persons highest on the eligible list for the class to which the vacant position has been allocated, who are willing to accept employment. If more than one vacancy is to be filled, an additional name shall be certified for each additional vacancy. The police chief shall forthwith appoint from the list of three the person the police chief considers best suited for such vacant position. (Ord. 21-02 § 5, 2021; Ord. 92-12 § 2 Exh. A, 1992)

3.44.020 Probationary period.

No appointment, employment or promotion in any position in the classified service shall be deemed complete until after the expiration of a one-year probationary period, as may be provided in the rules and regulations adopted by the commission. During such probationary period the police chief may, without cause, terminate the employment of the person appointed by him/her if the police chief deems him/her unfit or unsatisfactory for service in the city’s police department.
