2.66.010Lakewood Arts Commission Created.

There is created an advisory body to be known as the “Lakewood Arts Commission.” (Ord. 421 § 1 (part), 2006.)

2.66.020Membership.

There shall be at least seven (7) but no more than fifteen (15) members of the Lakewood Arts Commission who shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council, and who shall serve at the pleasure of the City Council. (Ord. 421 § 1 (part), 2006.)

2.66.030Appointment.

The members of the Lakewood Arts Commission shall be appointed from among members of the public to include, to the extent reasonably possible, representation from people representative of acknowledged accomplishment or persons working outside of professional practice in the arts, but who demonstrate a deep interest in and appreciation of cultural and artistic activities. At least one member shall be a working professional artist; at least one person working in the Lakewood education community; and at least one currently active in a Lakewood Community organization. 2.66.040Terms and Vacancies.

The terms of office of the members shall be for periods of three years; provided, however, that in the appointment of the first Commission, one third of the members shall be appointed for one year, one third of the members for two years, and one third of the members for three years. At the expiration of each of said terms so provided for, a successor shall be provided for a term of three years. Each member shall serve until his or her successor is qualified and appointed. 2.66.050Officers - Meetings.

A. At its first meeting of each year, the Lakewood Arts Commission members shall elect a chairperson and a vice chairperson from among the members of the Commission. The Lakewood Arts Commission shall establish a regular time and place of meeting and shall hold at least six regular meetings a year. Special meetings of the Commission may be called at any time by the Chair or by a majority of the members of the Commission upon written notice being given to all members of the Commission. All meetings must be properly noticed in compliance with the Open Public Meetings Act.

B. It shall be the duty of the chairperson to preside over all meetings of the Commission. The vice chairperson shall preside at all meetings where the chairperson is absent. Minutes shall be kept and meeting agendas prepared in coordination between members of the Board and staff members. A majority of the appointed members of the Commission shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business, and a majority vote of those present shall be necessary to carry any recommended action. 2.66.060Role of the Arts Commission.

The purpose of the Lakewood Arts Commission, consistent with guidance from the Lakewood City Council, is to assess needs, establish priorities, and make recommendations for the enrichment of the community and promotion of its cultural vitality through the arts.

The Lakewood Arts Commission will therefore do the following:

• Promote the visual, performing and literary arts;

• Encourage the creative contribution of local artists;

• Make recommendations for Public Art to the City Council;

• Support community-building events; and

• Foster the City’s cultural heritage (Ord. 421 § 1 (part), 2006.)

2.66.070Compensation.

The members of the Lakewood Arts Commission shall serve without compensation. (Ord. 421 § 1 (part), 2006.)
