STAINLESS STEEL REQUIREMENTS FOR COASTAL-FRONTING STRUCTURES

15.14.010 Purpose.
The purpose of this chapter is to ensure the durability and structural integrity of coastal-fronting structures by requiring the use of corrosion-resistant materials for exposed fasteners, flashings, and structural hardware. (Ord. 1132 § 1, 2025)
15.14.020 Applicability.
This chapter applies to all new construction, reconstruction, and major renovations of coastal-fronting structures within the jurisdiction of Ocean Shores, Washington. (Ord. 1132 § 1, 2025)
15.14.030 Material requirements.
A. All exposed fasteners, flashings, and structural hardware used in coastal-fronting structures must be constructed of 304 or 316 grade stainless steel to minimize corrosion and degradation.
B. Materials and installation shall comply with the best practices outlined in FEMA NFIP Technical Bulletin 8 (June 2019), including but not limited to:

15.14.040 Enforcement and compliance.
A. Compliance with this chapter shall be verified through the city building department as part of the permitting and inspection process.
B. Any violation of this chapter may result in penalties, including fines or required remedial actions, as determined by the city’s enforcement authority.
