1.28.010 Appointment and removal.

The mayor shall appoint and shall have the power to remove a chief of police, but the appointment and removal shall be confirmed by the city council. (Ord. 365 § 1, 1944).

1.28.020 Direction and control of police department.

The department of police of the city shall be under the direction and control of the chief of police subject to the direction of the mayor, and the lawful orders of the chief of police shall be promptly executed by his deputies and police officers in the city. (Ord. 1092 § 12, 2005; Ord. 365 § 2, 1944).

1.28.030 Power to pursue and arrest outside the city limits.

The chief of police shall have power to pursue and arrest outside of the city limits, if necessary, all or any violators of the city ordinances. (Ord. 365 § 2, 1944).

1.28.040 Duties.

A. It shall be the duty of the chief of police to suppress any riot, public tumult or any disturbance of the peace, and his lawful orders shall be promptly executed by his deputies and police officers in the city.

B. It shall be his duty to prosecute, before the proper authorities, all breaches or violations of, or noncompliance with, any city ordinance or law which comes to his knowledge.

C. He shall have charge of the city prisoners and of the city pound, and he may also with the consent of the mayor, when the same may be by them deemed necessary for the preservation of public order, appoint additional policemen who shall discharge the duties assigned to them for one day only.

D. He shall perform such other services as shall be required of him by the laws of the state and by the ordinances of the city council. (Ord. 1092 § 13, 2005; Ord. 365 § 3, 1944).

1.28.050 Compensation.

The chief of police shall receive, as compensation for his services, such sums as shall be fixed by the city council by ordinance or resolution. (Ord. 1092 § 14, 2005; Ord. 889 § 2, 1994; Ord. 836 § 4, 1990; Ord. 595 § 2, 1976).
