2.24.010 Department duties and powers.

The Sequim police department, established in 1970, is under the direction and control of the chief of police, subject to the direction of the city manager. The chief of police or the chief’s sworn officers enforce the criminal laws of the state of Washington and the city of Sequim within the city limits of Sequim or as otherwise authorized by law or interlocal agreement. The chief of police and the chief’s sworn officers may pursue and arrest violators beyond the city limits of Sequim and have all powers granted police by the laws of the state. 2.24.020 Chief of police – Appointment.

The city manager appoints a chief of police who holds office at the pleasure of the city manager and is not subject to confirmation by the city council. 2.24.030 Appointment of additional police personnel.

The city council may establish additional positions in the budget for law enforcement purposes. The hiring of sworn officers must comply with civil service requirements including exemptions allowed under RCW 41.12.050. (Ord. 2024-002 § 1 (Exh. A); Ord. 2009-036 § 1; Ord. 2009-032. Formerly 2.24.040)
