12.28.010 Compliance required.

All houses and buildings in the city of Shelton shall be numbered in conformity with the provisions of this chapter. (Prior code § 12.04.010)

12.28.020 Division of city described.

For the purpose of house numberings, First Street and its extension north and south shall constitute the dividing line between the portions of the city lying east and west thereof; Railroad Avenue shall constitute the dividing line between the portions lying north and south thereof. Along First Street the six hundred block shall be omitted at Turner Avenue. (Prior code § 12.04.020)

12.28.030 Odd and even number distribution.

Buildings on the northerly and easterly sides of any streets shall receive even numbers and buildings on the westerly and southerly sides shall receive odd numbers. (Prior code § 12.04.030)

12.28.040 Distance between numbers—Incomplete blocks.

A number shall be assigned to each space of fifteen feet counted from the initial point of each block; provided, however, that where a street is not cut through a block, thereby making an incomplete intersection, the number shall be continued only as far as the farther side of the intersecting street when the next higher centennial number shall be used. 12.28.050 Assigning number in additional block due to divergent angles.

Where, due to divergent angles, an additional block is interposed between regular streets, such blocks shall receive the same centennial number as the preceding block, but shall begin with fifty and fifty-one respectively, following the centennial number. (Prior code § 12.04.050)

12.28.060 Assigning number to more than one occupancy within fifteen feet.

Where more than one occupancy occurs in a fifteen foot space, the further one from the initial point shall receive the same number as the preceding occupancy, but with one-half added thereto. All upstairs occupancies shall be designated in a similar manner and, where this will not suffice, one-third, one-fourth, and so forth, shall be used, precedence given to downstairs front occupancies and upstairs front occupancies in the order named. 12.28.070 First numbers from initial point.

The first numbers from the initial point shall be two hundred and one hundred one respectively; and the second block two hundred—two hundred one, and so forth. (Prior code § 12.04.070)

12.28.080 Directional prefixes to streets.

All streets which cross First Street running easterly and westerly shall have the prefix east or west before the street name respectively as they are east or west of First Street; all streets which cross Railroad Avenue running northerly or southerly shall have the prefix north or south before the street name respectively, as they are north or south of Railroad Avenue; all streets in the Mountain View district named with letters of the alphabet shall have the prefix east or west before the street name respectively as they are east or west of Olympic Highway North. 12.28.090 Numbering designated blocks.

A.    All blocks west of Thirteenth Street and north of the intersection of Thirteenth Street and the Olympic Highway North, except West Birch Street, shall be numbered beginning with thirteen hundred at Thirteenth and the Olympic Highway northerly along the highway. All blocks in this area shall be numbered easterly and westerly from the Olympic Highway, beginning with one hundred on each side of the highway. Houses fronting on the westerly side of Thirteenth Street and on West Birch Street shall be numbered to conform with the blocks and street intersections on the easterly side of Thirteenth Street.

B.    Along the Olympic Highway South numbering shall be in accordance with intersecting streets, excepting between Harvard Avenue and Fairmount Avenue, where it shall be the nine hundred block, Harvard to Delaware, the one thousand block, Delaware to Olympia Street, the eleven hundred block, Olympia Street to the east line of Division Street extended, and the twelve hundred block from the east line of Division Street extended. Also excepted shall be the interval between Arcadia Avenue and the south city limits, where the numbering shall be as follows: the eighteen hundred block, Arcadia Avenue to the line common to lots one and two, block two, Forest Park Addition, thence the nineteen hundred block to the line common to lots eight and nine, thence the two thousand block to the city limits. 12.28.100 Numbering in Olympic View Addition.

Blocks one, eleven, twelve and twenty-one, Olympic View Addition, shall be marked as the three hundred fifty blocks east. (Prior code § 12.04.100)

12.28.110 Numbering on Railroad Avenue and Franklin Street West.

Numbering along Railroad Avenue West from Twelfth Street will break into the next one hundred at three hundred foot intervals measured along the centerline of Railroad Avenue from its intersection with the west line of Twelfth Street.

Numbering along the old county road to Matlock (Franklin Street West) shall be parallel to those on Railroad Avenue. (Prior code § 12.04.110)

12.28.120 Numbering in Angleside Heights Addition.

A.    In the Angleside Heights Addition houses shall be numbered as follows: On Hawthorne Lane beginning with one hundred on the north and one hundred one on the south at the southerly intersection of the center line of Hawthorne Lane and the east line of Sixteenth Street, numbered consecutively along the centerline of Hawthorne Lane.

B.    Holly Drive shall be numbered south, beginning with four hundred one at the midpoint of the front line of lot six, block two, and with four hundred at the northeast corner of lot one, block one. Numbering on Holly Drive will break to the five hundred and six hundred blocks at the intersections of the south lines of Olympic and Thomas Avenues extended.

C.    Bayview extension will be numbered beginning with fourteen hundred on the north side only to a point fifty-five feet west of the southeast corner of lot four, block four, and from thence on both sides of the street, beginning with fifteen hundred on the north and fifteen hundred one on the south sides of the street.

D.    Sixteenth Street will be numbered as follows: North boundary of plat to Bayview extension, the four hundred block; Bayview extension to Hawthorne Lane, the four hundred fifty block; Hawthorne Lane to Hawthorne Lane, the five hundred block; Hawthorne Lane to Turner Avenue, the six hundred block. 12.28.130 Numbering in Bayview home tracts.

In Bayview home tracts numbering in the easterly direction shall break from eleven hundred to twelve hundred on the west line of Hill Street and Hill Street extended and from thirteen hundred to fourteen hundred on the east line of Bay Street and Bay Street extended. (Prior code § 12.04.130)

12.28.140 Numbering in Schultz Addition.

Houses in the Schultz Addition shall be numbered north from the south line of Roy Boulevard beginning with nine hundred and west from Seventh Street beginning with seven hundred. (Prior code § 12.04.140)

12.28.150 Numbering in Dr. Callanan’s Addition.

In Dr. Callanan’s Addition to Mountain View, block twenty-one shall be the nine hundred and one thousand blocks in the northerly direction dividing on the line between lots nine and ten. Block nineteen shall be the eleven hundred and twelve hundred blocks in the northerly direction dividing on the line between lots four and five. (Prior code § 12.04.150)

12.28.160 Numbering building covering more than one space.

If a building covers more than one fifteen foot space the number shall be determined by the space on which the principal front entrance is located. (Prior code § 12.04.160)

12.28.170 House number to be designated on building permit.

It shall be obligatory on every owner or contractor in taking out a building permit to state definitely the distance in feet from any known point to the front entrance of the projected building and the house number of such building shall be shown on said building permit. (Prior code § 12.04.170)

12.28.180 Obtaining correct number from city engineer.

Any interested party may obtain the correct house number for any building by applying to the city engineer, provided the correct location be given. Such service shall be free of charge. (Prior code § 12.04.180)

12.28.190 Map designating numbers to be kept.

It shall be the duty of the city engineer to prepare and keep in his office a map of the city of Shelton showing the centennial number for each block and keep same up to date as new additions are added to the city. (Prior code § 12.04.190)

12.28.200 Failure to comply.

All houses shall be properly numbered as herein provided and it shall be the duty of the chief of police to notify owners or occupants who fail to comply with the provisions of this chapter and, if not corrected within two weeks from such notification, he shall cause to be affixed the proper house number and collect therefor an amount fixed by the city council. 12.28.210 Obscuring numbers prohibited.

All house numbers shall be affixed in such a manner that screen doors and other obstructions shall not obscure them and so that they can be readily seen from the street. (Prior code § 12.04.210)

12.28.220 Numbering of areas not covered.

Numbering of houses and buildings on streets and blocks not specifically covered in this chapter or in cases where a strict adherence to the provisions of this chapter would lead to unnecessary confusion shall be assigned by the city engineer in a manner to conform with the overall city plan, subject to the approval of the city council.
