2.325.010 Police committee.

(a) Creation. The village of Arena maintains its own police department. The village of Arena has not created a board of police commissioners pursuant to Section 62.13, Wis. Stats. Instead, the village of Arena hereby establishes a police committee pursuant to Section 61.65, Wis. Stats.

(b) Members; Appointment. The village of Arena police committee shall consist of three members, none of whom may be an elected or appointed official of the village or be employed by the village. Each member of the committee shall serve a term of three years. At the first meeting of the village board in May of each year, the village board, following recommendation of the village public safety committee, shall appoint one committee member to succeed the member whose term expires in that year. The village board, upon recommendation of the public safety committee, may also reappoint the member whose term expires in that year. All appointments shall be subject to approval by the village board and, following approval, such appointments shall be filed with the secretary of the committee. The village board may provide for some payment to the persons serving as members of the committee at a rate established by the village board. A committee member shall continue to serve until his or her successor is appointed and qualified. Upon adoption of the ordinance codified in this chapter, the initial members of the police committee shall be appointed as follows:

(1) One member for a term expiring on May 1, 2021;

(2) One member for a term expiring on May 1, 2022; and

(3) One member for a term expiring on May 1, 2023.

(c) Meetings. The committee shall meet at such time and date as determined by the committee. The secretary of the committee shall be elected from the voting members of the committee.

(d) Duties and Powers. The police committee shall act under Section 62.13(5), Wis. Stats., in place of a board of police and fire commissioners whenever a disciplinary issue arises. [Ord. dated 7/7/20 #3 § 1].
