2.16.010 PURPOSE:

The purpose of this chapter is to aid and assist in preserving the historic and cultural aspects in the life of the city. (1972 Code § 2.48.010)

2.16.020 COMMISSION ESTABLISHED; TERMS:

A.    Establishment: There is hereby established an historic preservation commission, consisting of five (5) members, to be appointed by the mayor and approved by the city council for terms of four (4) years.

B.    Staggered Terms: The first appointees shall be selected so that three (3) will be appointed for four (4) year terms, and the remaining two (2) for a two (2) year term, so that thereafter appointments will be made every two (2) years. (1972 Code § 2.48.020; amd. 2003 Code)

2.16.030 POWERS AND DUTIES:

The powers and duties of the commission will be:

A.    The inspection and investigation of any site, building, structure or landscaping in the city which it has reason to believe is or will in the near future be an historic or cultural monument.

B.    The compilation and maintenance of a current list of all such sites, buildings, landscaping or structures which it has determined from such inspection and investigation to be historical or cultural monuments. Such list shall contain a brief description of the site, building, structure or landscaping, and the reason for its inclusion in the list.

C.    The publication and transmission to all interested parties of such list, including the dissemination of any public information concerning the list or any site, building or structure, or landscaping contained therein.

D.    The historic preservation commission shall have no right nor power to acquire any property for or on behalf of itself or the city. It shall have the right to acquire and hold such funds that come to it for purposes of historic preservation projects, and the right and power to become custodians of documents, paintings and other memorabilia that are of historical and cultural interest to the city.

E.    The commission shall also encourage, implement and support any and all efforts to educate the public concerning the heritage and culture pertaining to the city. (1972 Code § 2.48.030; amd. 2003 Code)
