2.20.010 Establishment.

A fire department for the town is created, which shall consist of a fire chief and an assistant chief and not more than thirty-five firemen for each one thousand population; provided, that if in the judgment of the town council it is deemed necessary, an additional five firemen for each one thousand population may be added to the membership of the fire department, and which membership shall in no case be limited to less than fifteen firemen.  The fire chief, assistant chief and firemen shall be appointed by the mayor and shall hold office during his pleasure.  (Ord. 473 (part), 2008:  Ord. 163-B §1, 1985;  Ord. 2.20.020 Board of fire officers--Generally.

The fire chief and assistant chief shall constitute a board of fire officers, who shall meet at the call of the fire chief and who shall have charge of and be responsible for all fire equipment.  (Ord. 473 (part), 2008:  Ord. 163-B §1(part), 1985;  Ord. A-153 §2, 1933)

2.20.030 Fire chief--General supervisorial powers--Compensation of members for attending drills.

The fire chief shall have the general supervision of the fire department and it shall be his duty to call out for practice drill once each month, weather permitting, all the members of the department.  Any member who fails to respond to such call shall be liable to suspension or expulsion by the mayor.  Members attending fire calls or drills shall be paid in accordance with rates set by council resolution.  (Ord. 473 (part), 2008:  Ord. 163-B §§l(part), 2, 1985;  Ord. 2.20.040 Authority of fire chief and assistant chief.

The fire chief and assistant chief or firemen in command of any fire are vested with full and complete authority, and are authorized and directed to require and secure the removal of any and all obstructions from in front of and around fire hydrants, divert or hold traffic on any street or alley, and for the purpose are authorized to call upon the head of any municipal department for aid in enforcing such authority.  (Ord. 473 (part), 2008:  Ord. 163-B §1(part), 1985;  Ord. 2.20.050 Board of fire officers--Powers.

The board of fire officers is vested with full power and authority to enforce all ordinances of the town relating to fire, to inspect from time to time all premises where accumulations of combustible materials or other hazardous conditions are liable to exist, and to order such changes or removals as in their opinion are necessary for safety from fire.  For purposes of inspection, they are empowered to enter any and all buildings and premises at any reasonable hour.  (Ord. 473 (part), 2008:  Ord. 2.20.060 Authority to adopt rules and regulations.

The board of fire officers is authorized to adopt rules for the government of the department, but such rules shall not become effective until presented to and approved by the town council.  (Ord. 473 (part), 2008:  Ord. A-153 §6, 1933)
